AREIVIM VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time. They just have the heart."

We would like to share the volunteer stories of other HIWP members! Please send your story, and a picture if you have one, to areivim@hiwp.org.

THE KAHN FAMILY

Project Ore is a program of the Educational Alliance on the Lower East Side. This program provides a daily hot meal and case management services to homeless Jews, most of whom have mental illness. Leading up to Eli’s bar mitzvah, our family served meals during the summer on erev Shabbat and also on erev Rosh Hashana. We led the oneg Shabbat program and danced with the participants as they welcomed in the Jewish New Year. Other HIWP kids who participated included Doni Marder, Nate Rosenblum, Ilan Romm, Jacob Madoff, and Eli Madoff. The Kahn family hosted a basketball-a-thon, attended by many friends and family, where $5000 was raised for Project Ore!

MARC GUTHARTZ

I have been a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician at  Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance since 2007. In that capacity, I provide pre-hospital care and hospital transport to people requiring emergency medical intervention. EMTs of all levels of training and certification are the people in the community who are the first responders when a 911 call is made. It is an interesting, rewarding, and sometimes exciting volunteer job. The work we do makes a difference. Training to become an EMT is available at the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance. For more information, speak to me or check out their website Scarsdalevac.com. I am also an American Heart Association Certified CPR instructor in conjunction with Blythedale Children’s Hospital. I have taught hundreds of people the life-saving skills involved in responding to someone in respiratory and cardiac arrest, as well as choking rescue and other related health and safety classes. HIWP periodically offers CPR classes. Join us and learn important life-saving skills.

BAR & BAT MITZVAH CHESED PROJECT

These boys and girls packed $1000 worth of groceries donated by their amazing families. This donation fed 45 families for Thanksgiving! They also delivered the meals to Lifting Up Westchester and learned about the significant impact this donation makes on the lives of people in Westchester who are hungry. "I was shocked by how many people my age are hungry in Westchester," says Lev Fish. Those participating in this project included Gabi & Noam Pollack, Nate Ehrenhaus, Charlie Rosen, Eytan Fein, Ilan & Jana Romm, Avraham Seff, Jacob Madof, Elie Kahn, Rachel & Debbie Lehman, Deborah & Batya Puro and Erica, Dudi & Lev Fish. For other volunteer opportunities, contact Nancy Inzinna at liftingupwestchester.org.
